You've captured the melancholy beautifully! I went there as the sun was setting in February, the birds were flocking above the pier and it was magical to behold.
What happened to make you stop?
There's a second pier too, with the usual stuff like rides and games, which I'm not all that keen on. Best thing on that pier, in my opinion, is the Helter Skelter - the ride that that Beatles song was inspired by.
Thanks for looking,

Actually, I did phrase that wrongly. I wonder why I said that.
The piers at Brighton have a very melancholy feel for me. Sort of nostalgia and a mixture of memories. It's a really shame to see the structure disappearing into the sea. But I suppose there's a kind of "nature taking it's course" thing going on too. The effects of salt, the power of the waves, the wind and the impermanence of iron and wood.
I remember the helter skelter, a ghost train, a kind of maze of mirrors, candy floss... and that weird feeling of walking along and being able to see - between the boards of the pier - the sea beneath your feet.
I think of how we can be turned into dirt but do not know how how to make life from dirt.
I will miss its skeleton when they finally might possibly agree what to do to it.

Sorry I forgot you're in the uk, I somehow thought you were in Australia.

I like La-La Land. I spend an increasing amount of time there myself.

The whole stone to sand thing- I used to think about that so much. Also the sand to glass thing- witchcraft.
